After an completing the entire Digital Photography and Animation course, I can confidently say that I have learned so much. From practicing Photoshop skills to figuring out the way to get that perfect photo, there is an endless amount of helpful techniques that I now know. During this semester, I felt like my most successful project was the one that we did very recently. I am so proud of the light paintings that we did and not only was it one of the most enjoyable, I think that they came out great. I have always seen examples of these paintings online but never thought that I could actually make one myself. If I had simply drawn a line, that would have been amusing enough to me, however we created pieces of art. With the help of classmates, I made a shooting star, a colorful storm, and a field of flowers. They all had so many colors and I thought that they looked like something you might see on a famous Instagram page or even in a magazine.
Along with all of the enjoyment that came with this course, some of the projects taught me very interesting and important information. An example of this would be the research slideshow that we made on a famous photographer. Often times in art classes, I feel like I get to practice techniques and learn how to do certain things but I don’t study where they started or who became famous because of them. I did my research project on Marilyn Bridges who was an aerial photographer. She took pictures of ancient structures that you would see on the cover of National Geographic. I’ve seen similar pictures before but I actually got to learn how they are taken.
Other assignments that I did in this class had me using techniques that I already knew and gave me a chance to perfect them. For instance, I got a lot of practice with Photoshop and other online design programs in this semester. Last year in Art Design and New Media, I could just barely change my lip or eye color in Photoshop and today I can do things such as change the filter or a picture or give it a completely different effect. I got to recreate an Instagram filter using Photoshop skills that I learned earlier and also put a butterfly effect on one of my photos. Also, I learned how to go into a computer program and make a photo look like it glitched. The things that I can do on the computer has increased so much this past year and it will only continue increasing from this point on.
Out of all of the projects that I have done this year, there is one that I feel reflects me and my participation in this course the most. This would be the gradient painting that we completed at the beginning of the semester. In this project, I got to use all aspects of this course and also express myself. I first took a picture of myself, then edited in Photoshop, and painted it myself. I feel a bit of a personal connection to this painting not only because it is of me but also because I spent so much time working it. It was a very long process and throughout that process, I got to change things slightly to make it my own.
With all that I have gained in this class, I think that I am going to find it useful later in my life. I have always wanted to go into some kind of job that uses creativity or design and taking this course will have helped me if I ever do. Taking quality pictures is important when trying to attract people to a service or product. Also, with a lot of aspects of design being on technology lately, knowing how to use programs like Photoshop will be beneficial. I am going to take what I have learned in this class with me for the rest of my life.
